An online searchable archive of past issues of the Lantern is now available, thanks to a project undertaken by University Libraries.
The OSU student newspaper of The Ohio State University, published continuously since 1881, has been digitized, says Amy McCrory, digital imaging specialist in the Preservation Office of the Digital Imaging Division of the Libraries. The archive includes all copies of the Lantern published from 1881-1892 and 1959-1982. Additional issues will be added on an ongoing basis, with the completed project including all the issues published from 1881-1997. If funding is available, the remaining years through 2009 and beyond will be added.
During the Lantern’s first year of publication, two literary societies provided its content, which emphasized advice and social commentary more than news, McCrory said. The paper’s title changed briefly, for three months in 1892, when it appeared as Wahoo, then a popular cheer for the university.
McCrory said that as a record of student culture at a major Midwestern public university, the Lantern has extraordinary value for social history. War, peace, politics, religion, race and gender issues, censorship, art, entertainment and more have appeared in the newspaper’s stories and illustrations. OSU’s graduates have made their mark in the national press, including The New York Times and The Washington Post. Cartoonists Brian Basset, editorial cartoonist and creator of “Adam@Home,” and Jeff Smith, creator of the comic “Bone,” were regular contributors to the paper during the 1970s and 1980s, respectively.
Funding for the digitization and online presentation of the Lantern was provided by OSU’s Administration. The project was coordinated within the University Libraries’ Preservation Office/Digital Imaging Division, with advice from the Libraries’ Digital Initiatives Steering Committee. Images were scanned from original paper copies where available; all other images were scanned from microfilm.

This website is designed to complement the work of the Copyright Help Center (located in Room 004 of the Science and Engineering Library) and is intended to become a central resource to help faculty, students, and other members of the university community navigate the issues of intellectual property in the campus environment. The site currently features “Frequently Asked Questions” pages on topics including Fair Use and what researchers can do to guard their own copyrights.
