Wha’cha gonna do? February 29-March 2

Now that the Oscars are over I can go back to being a normal person until fair season begins.   Gallery Hop is Saturday but there’s lot of other stuff to do too…

FIN student employee Alex Walp is having his graduation show Coke and Sympathy at Skylab (57 E. Gay St.) this weekend,  Saturday 6-10pm and Sunday 12-3pm.  For more info or to read Alex’s blog go to www.alexwalp.com

Also this weekend is SPACE:  Small Press and Alternative Comics Expo.  My pal Mary and her husband Michael Neno (artwork above) will be hawking their wares at a table there Saturday and Sunday, 10am-6pm both days.  Aladdin Shrine Complex (I-270 Easton exit), admission $5 a day or $8 for the weekend.

The Hives concert is Saturday night at the Newport!  I can’t believe this hasn’t sold out.  Did you know that Andre 3000 wrote Hey Ya! right after he saw The Hives live?  Tickets are $17.  No having to pay $50 to see them with Maroon Five at Nationwide Arena like the last time they were in town.  My favorite Hives song is Abra Cadaver.

At the Central Ohio Home and Garden Show this weekend..STINGER!  Saturday from 12-1, meet the Blue Jackets mascot.  Can’t miss him, dude is bright green!

The Strongman Competition will be the highlight (for me anyway) of the Arnold Fitness Expo at 1pm on Saturday.  Check the website for hours, shuttle shops, parking, etc.  Oh yeah, and the schedules of the other events.  www.arnoldexpo.com  They will also be hosting an open casting call for prospective American Gladiators contestants.  (If you find yourself on the opposite end of the fitness scale, Buckeye Hall of Fame will be holding open casting Saturday for Biggest Loser from 10am-6pm).

Have a good one!  Gretchen

Wha’cha gonna do? November 9-11

I should say, wha’cha gonna do other than run out a buy a new sweater vest? (See Amanda’s latest posting below for inspiration.)

Well, Friday night German Village is having their annual German Village Holiday Open House. Awesome German Village shops will be open from 4-10pm - that INCLUDES the Fudge Haus (pictured above), home of the football-shaped Tressel Truffle.

The Ohio Exposition Center (also known as the Ohio State Fairgrounds) has other stuff going on during the non-fair seasons and this weekend’s events are exceptional. In the Bricker Building from 8-6 Saturday and Sunday you can enjoy Ohio Alpacafest, a celebration of the wooley llamas and those who love them. Maybe Amanda can go buy some raw wool there and spin herself a sweater vest.

What? Not a llama fan? But you love chickens? You’re in luck because the fairgrounds will also be hosting the National Poultry Breeder’s Show from 7am-6pm on Saturday and 7am-12noon Sunday in the Voinovich Livestock/Trade Center. You will be surrounded by professionals qualified to answer the question “What came first, the chicken or the egg?”

The North Market Holiday Food Festival is Saturday with various events all day long. For the schedule see www.northmarket.com. At 2pm architects are judging a Gingerbread House competition! The winner gets a $250 gift certificate, which I can tell you as someone who has attempted making gingerbread houses in the past, probably comes close to the cost of ingredients and time involved.

On Sunday the three area Lair’s Hallmark shops (which includes the store in the Lane Avenue shopping center) will be having their annual 20% off EVERYTHING sale. I cannot believe this. I have never gone, but am going this year just to see if it’s for real.

Have a good one! Gretchen

Cuirass of the Week

Long have I regaled Gretchen with stories of my love for a nice sweater vest, and with the weather taking a turn for the cold, this is the week I go public. They’re not just for Jim Tressel anymore, although he does make a fine specimen in his grey numbers:

Coach Tressel

No, the enjoyment of a good sweater vest can be traced even further back than Coach Tressel to such luminaries as Gene Kelley, Hot Jake from Sixteen Candles, Gilles the Librarian (obviously - I’m a librarian, people, I have needs!), and Cutie Henry from Ugly Betty:

But surely there must be an art historical explanation for my undying devotion to the sweater vest. After much reflection, I believe I’ve hit on the reason for my SV-crush: the cuirass worn by Augustus in the statue known as the Augustus of Primaporta. It’s all there: manliness, figure concealment/enhancement, and a little story to keep you amused if what he’s saying is actually quite boring. The cuirass/sweater vest has it all!

Is it just me, or would Coach Tressel totally look like the AoP if he’d only wear his hair that way? Roland Barthes, himself aware of the appeal of a toasty cardie, would have a field day with that one!

Wha’cha gonna do? November 2-4

Bee Movie opened today! I’m jazzed! And all the movies at the Drexel Gateway this weekend sound good as well. Sports fans can go watch the OSU/Wisconson game at the Drexel Gateway and then go see whatever movie is playing immediately afterwards.

It’s that time again. Gallery Hop runs from 4-10pm on Saturday. High lights include Adam Brouillette’s Partytime! opening at the Ohio Art League from 6-9pm, Roy G Biv Gallery’s exhibit of Joe Wirtheim posters (reception 7-10) and Take 2 Apparel’s group exhibit Hollywood Legends.

My 3rd favorite craft show takes place this weekend. The Clintonville Women’s Club Bazaar takes place at 3951 High St. (just north of the Whetstone Branch of the public library) from 8:30am-3pm Saturday. I buy something every year. One year I bought a painting of goldfish in a bowl painted by a member of their ‘Rembrandt Club’ painting group.

The Riffe Gallery (77 S. High St.) is featuring the group exhibit New Horizons: Rewards of Time and Place. 3 of the artists are OSU art department faculty members Laura Lisbon, Mary Jo Bole and Todd Slaughter.

There a really cool event taking place on Sunday at the Central Ohio Diabetes Association at 1100 Dennison Ave. The Fall Celebration for Children with Diabetes is a free event that includes a sugar-free trick-or-treat, games and all-around good-times.

Have a good one! Gretchen

Wha’cha gonna do? October 26-28

Woot! Woot!

Weekend time! Oh yeah! Didn’t get registered for the 2007 Festival of Cartoon Art? Don’t worry, here’s a few things to keep your time occupied while all your buddies are partying with editorial cartoonists down at the Renaissance Hotel.

Tonight is OSU’s Evening at the Columbus Museum of Art from 7-11pm. Free admission, people!

http://housing.osu.edu/article.asp?id=460&type=21

I took my cousins to this event once and it was a good time. Tranportation is even being provided round-trip between campus and the museum (the link above lists the 4 campus shuttle stops). The current Monet exhibit should be pretty impressive. If you don’t go you might check out OSU’s Halloween Concert at Weigel Auditorium instead - admission is $6, $5 if you’re an OSU affiliate.

You can stand right where President Lincoln’s casket is in this picture! Creepy! Haunted Statehouse Tours cost $6 for adults, $2 for those under 16. Friday and Saturday at 7:30, 8, 8:30, 9 and 9:30pm. I heard they show you a set of chesspieces made from HUMAN BONES! I think you’ll agree, that alone makes it worth the price of admission.

Okay, you know how the OSU vs. Penn State game on Saturday is at night? Livingston United Methodist Church (200 E. Livingston Ave.) will be projecting the game on the shadow wall!! You know, that side of the church that normally has a giant silhouette of Jesus on it? I could care less about watching the game, but I’m actually going to make a point to drive by because it should be pretty spectacular.

Another bird show! The Radisson Inn, Worthington, will be hosting the Ohio Bird Fair Sunday from 10am-4:30pm, admission $3, kids under 9 free. I’ve pictured the Cherry-headed conure above. They are little commedians. After you attend, or better yet before, rent The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill on dvd.

I know Jay Leno is always saying this is one of his pet peeves, but I love it - animals in costumes!!! Capital Area Humane Society is sponsoring their annual Halloween Pet Parade out at Easton on Sunday from 1-3pm. There’s a fee to particpate, but it’s free to watch.

Have a good one! Gretchen

Shoe of the Week

I’ve quite suddenly got into Moroni portraits, brought on by the impulse purchase of a book about 16th-century paintings in the National Gallery. I loved his portrait of a tailor in London, but no shoes, alas. The silhouette of the legs of the gentleman here make such a strong graphic statement (not that kind of graphic, silly!), almost like a shorthand for the lower half of a body. N’est-ce pas?

Wha’cha gonna do? October 19-21

Reports from the front desk are that we have some very festive Halloween decorations currently going up, so come on over and see our handy-work.

Well, tonight at 6pm is the Homecoming Parade which begins at the stadium south-stands and after going up High St. will end at St. Johns Arena. The Homecoming Tailgate and Pep Rally will begin there at 7:30pm with the promise of free food and special guests.

The Nightmare Before Christmas in 3-D opens at pretty much all theaters today, so see it before it’s 3-week run is up. Definitely in my top-5 movies of all time.

Saturday is the last day of the Circleville Pumpkin Show. Yes, I know it’s really far away. But it’s worth it. They have pumpkin-related crafts, real pumpkins of various varieties (and their seeds to grow your own), a giant pumpkin pie, deep-fried pumpkin blossoms, a pumpkin-themed art exhibit, frozen cider, and every single dessert that can be made with pumpkin as an ingredient. My one piece of advice - steer clear of the pumpkin pizza….Nasty! That’s just my opinion.

At 8am on Sunday former FIN student employee Vicki (Kochman) Oatis and her husband Ben will be running in the Columbus Marathon. Vicki has run it before and finished. A good portion of the second-half of the race takes place around the campus area, so drag your lawn chair and some snacks out to the course and get comfortable while you cheer on people 1000 times more fit than you.

Have a good one! Gretchen

Shoe of the Week

Don’t you think Michelangelo-as-Heraclitus’ fold-over slouchy boots would be great for fall? I can’t recommend wearing them to bed, though, or for so long that they become fused to your skin. No wonder he’s got his crank on.

Wha’cha gonna do? October 12-14

Yay! It’s not 90 degrees outside!

Yep, fall is here. I will be spending a lot of time in Gahanna…football game Friday, WestieWalk Saturday (dog parades are awesome), choir concert Sunday….but trust me, there are lots of things to do this weekend that aren’t Gretchen’s-family-affiliated.

FIN student employee Jane Drozd is participating Multiples: a group show opening Saturday at Gallery 831, 831 N. Front St. The artist reception is Saturday from 7-9pm. www.clayspace831.com

The 45-minute documentary Paper Tiger Reads Paper Tiger Television documents how the staff put together their independent news programs and compete against corporate-owned news media. It’s showing for the rest of the months in The Box at the Wexner Center. (That’s the little dark room across from the giftshop. A lot of people are afraid to go in, but don’t be. It’s just a little room with the movie playing.) The little stools in there are really comfortable and mold to your butt. It’s on anytime the Wexner Center is open through Oct. 31 so it’s a great way to kill an hour between classes.

$8 will get you into the biggest psychic fair in the Midwest. This weekend Saturday 9am-8pm and 10am-6pm Sunday Veteran’s Memorial on Broad St. will be home to the Universal Light Expo. Tana Hoy, Bill Mitchell and a few other popular psychics will be there, but so will 300+ vendors selling crystals, relaxing music cds, and lots of other crap for people seeking inner peace.

This Sunday Oakland Nurseries on 161 in Dublin is having The National Pumpkin Weigh-Off. These babies are always good for a fall photo-op as people from Ohio and the surrounding states truck in monster-sized pumpkins to be weighted and awarded. Weigh-off begins at 2pm.

Got $6? For the next 3 weekends The Ohio Railway Museum in Worthington will be featuring The Ghost Trolley, which I’ve actually been to and it’s pretty cool. First, one of the really old passenger trains is set up with a few un-scary dummies (really, it’s fine for little kids) and you walk through the old train, which is actually very interesting. Then you wait for the electric trolley car which picks you up, and while you are told a scary story by the guide, it stops, old men with rubber masks jump on (I THINK they were masks) and they punch your train ticket. Then the trolley goes the other direction back to the station. You can then stop in the gift shop and pick up one of their awesome ‘Get a Jolley, Ride a Trolley’ bumper stiickers.

Have a great one! Gretchen
