Wha’cha gonna do? May 9-11
May 9th, 2008
There’s a lot going on this weekend. And it’s Mother’s Day, which mean you probably already have some tentative plans, but still, let me fill in any holes in your schedules…
Our buddies at the Cartoon Research Library next door will be opening their exibit space to the public on Saturday from 1-5pm for their new exhibit Jeff Smith: Bone and Beyond. They are never open on Saturdays! So this would be a good day to take the fam. Also, the man himself will be at the Wexner Center film/video theater at 2pm for Jeff Smith and Scott McCloud in Conversation.
Saturday evening is the opening reception (”free and open to all”) for OSU’s graduate students in the art department. The OSU Group MFA Thesis exhibition features works from 6-9pm at the OSU Urban Arts Space.
I suddenly want kids and I need them by Saturday at noon. Why? Supernanny will be casting Saturday at Tuttle Crossing from 12-4. I LOVE SUPERNANNY. Jo Frost (above, left) is a genius! She won’t be on hand (boo!) but producer and Columbus-native Josh Mills will be. Also this weekend, for all us reality-show freaks, Jen and Ryan (above, right), stars of the recently-ended Big Brother 9 will be appearing at the Arena District club Mynt on Friday night.
The Wexner Center will be hosting the Ohio Short Film and Video Showcase Saturday. The Youth Division (which sounds like the name of a band) will start at 5pm and the Adult Division begins at 7pm. $3.
OSU’s own Charles Kleibacker is spotlighted in the new exhibit Kleibacker: New York Designer to Ohio Curator at The Riffe Gallery on High Street. Park under the Statehouse near the southwest elevator and then just cross the street to the Riffe Building. Hours are on their website: www.RiffeGallery.org. By the way, The Columbus Museum of Art sells some pretty awesome Kleibacker scarves in their giftshop.
A perfect way to celebrate Mother’s Day? Take her to the roller derby! The Ohio Roller Girls will be doing their thing in a double-header at the Lauche Building at the fairgrounds off of 17th at 5pm. They’ll have a big sign up on 17th, you can’t miss it. $10 in advance or $15 at the door. The competing teams are The Sprockettes, the Band of Brawlers, the Take-Outs, and my favorite, The Blackeye Bullies.
Have a good one! Gretchen
