Whoo-hoo! Oh yeah! 4th of July!

Party like it’s 1999!…. well, more like 1989, by going to see Rick Springfield and Taylor Dane in their free concert at Dublin Coffman High School’s football stadium on Friday. Dublin officials have dubbed this event “Red, White and Rewind.” Clever! Dane starts her show at 6:15, Springfield at 8:15, with fireworks at 9:50. Gates open at 4:30. (FYI - Rick Springfield is supposed to return to General Hospital in his dual roles of Dr. Noah Drake and rock star Eli Love within the next couple weeks. Awesome!)

Have you ever been to the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in Pickerington? I haven’t, but this exhibit is sure to get me there. MotoStars: Celebrities and Motorcyles will be on through December 2009. It’s been my experience that when you think ‘Oh, that exhibit is going to be there forever, I can wait to go,” you wait and wait and then it’s over. You’ve missed it. So jump on this one before a year-and-a-half fly by. $10 for adults, cheaper for kids.

When I was a little kid my friend MaryBeth and I got dropped off at the movie theater to see Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind. Just ending it’s run at that time was Jaws which I knew would be WAY to scary and have avoided seeing it through the years. I saw it for the first time on tv about a month ago. And you know what? It WAS too scary! But, if you’re brave you can catch it Friday and Saturday at midnight at the Gateway Theater. I can’t even imagine having to see that gross shark on a big screen. But I have to say, it was a pretty good movie. ha

The 8 paintings making up the Lima Company Memorial will be on diplay in the Statehouse through November 11, but in the rotunda only through this weekend before it’s moved to the south hallway behind Representatives Hall. I’m going this weekend to give a spiritual shout-out to distant cousin Lance Corporal Edward A. “Augie” Schroeder II who is pictured on one of the Memorial panels.

Yeah, yeah, everybody knows Comfest is this weekend. But there’s other stuff too.

First though, something you may not know about Comfest….Two former FIN student employees will be playing this weekend! Friday at 9:30pm Eve Warnock’s group Queen Mae and the Bells (above left) will be doing one of their way-out performance pieces. Check out Andrew Graham’s group RTFO Bandwagon (above right) Saturday at Noon on the Offramp Stage. I see Michelle Shocked is playing at 6:15 Saturday on the Bozo Stage. At one time I actually owned the cassette single for her song “On the Other Side.”

The amount of activities taking place in celebration of Pride ‘08 are many, and I think Columbus’ GLBT community is great at welcoming the general public to these events. Besides the parade down High St. at 1pm that evening, the most popular event of the weekend will probably be the Jennifer Holliday concert at 5:45pm in Bicentennial Park. I’m pretty sure she’ll be singing at everyone that she’s not goin’ and you’re gonna love her.

Friday night at 7:30pm Chris Rock will be bringing his comedy stylings to the Palace Theatre. Behind the theater after the show = best opportunity for getting pictures and/or autographs. The stage door is also right there at the parking garage - convenient!
You sank my Battleship!
The Origins Game Fair is taking place at the Convention Center this weekend. I wish I knew somebody who had been to this because I’m very curious about it. Next year I shall enter the Battleship tournament. I also see at least 3 games on the schedule that are art-related. Good times! See website for all-day-pass and per-game prices. http://www.originsgamefair.com

Opening June 29th at Easton, a new snack shop! Emilee’s Italian Ice will be opening with Emilee herself giving out cupcakes and balloons from 11-5. FREE CUPCAKES, PEOPLE! Oh yeah, and there’s an art fair there all weekend. But FREE CUPCAKES…..

In an unusual development, Lucas Cranach includes in Nymph of the Spring what may be art history’s first glimpse of… fuzzy bunny slippers?

Let’s see what’s in store for the first official weekend of summer….

It’s time for the 16th Annual Worthington Arts Festival. Saturday 9-6 and Sunday 11-5. Supposedly voted “Best Arts and Crafts Show in Ohio” I shall report on my purchases next week.

I’ve never seen Back to the Future all the way through. But I can make up for that sad deficit this Saturday and Sunday at either 2pm or 7:30pm at the Ohio Theater. I know it will be great because it features the Delorean, the coolest car ever made!Organ concerts begin a half hour prior to the start of the movie. $3.50 (a steal) but it’s cheaper (unbelievably!) when you buy a strip of 10 tickets for $21.50. The strip tickets can be used in any combination for any of the CAPA Summer Movie Series films.

Speaking of movies have you been to the Landmark movie theater at Gateway since the Drexel left? Well, a good time to try it out might be the midnight showings of the ’70’s classic, The Warriors, Friday and Saturday night. Come cheer as a gang tries to make it through their rival’s ’hoods back to their home turf of Coney Island. I expected nothing from it when Entertainment Weekly put it on their list of controversial movies, but I thought it was great.

Gas was $4.09 on my way in this morning, but for those whose day trips can’t be disuaded by rising gas prices, a trip to the Ohio Decorative Arts Center in Lancaster (The Reese Peters House, 145 E. Main) is in order. The current exhibit features one of my favorite artists. The Artist’s Hand: Dard Hunter and the American Arts and Crafts Movement runs through August 31, Tuesday-Sunday 1-4pm.

Well, after work you need to run out get your snacks because Friday night is The Daytime Emmy Awards (ABC, 8-10pm). If General Hospital’s Tony Geary doesn’t win best actor I will be shocked. He’s awesome! My sister bought me a Tony Geary mousepad for my birthday once.

The bunnies in this week’s work continue their chattering ways. The two on the right seem almost like they were telling secrets before being shushed by angels carrying what appears to be the world’s heaviest crown. Much like his people, Durer’s bunnies are incredibly muscular little things.

Ooh, Friday the 13th! Scary! Stay busy and you won’t notice all your bad luck.

It’s been a cold spring and a hot summer. Bad for us, good for roses. This weekend check out the fruits of Mother Nature’s labor at the 2008 Columbus Rose Festival at the Whetstone Park of Roses. Our volunteer Linda lives the next street over and says she’s never seen them so populous. The festival also had fun stuff to buy, good food and entertainment. All day Saturday and Sunday, and best of all, free. My favorite roses at the garden are the Reba McEntire (an orangey-red) and the Chris Evert (a swirly pink/yellow/orange combo).

Friday Fun Night at the CAPA Summer Movie Series brings you the Audrey Hepburn classic Sabrina. I didn’t win anything last Friday but I did pick up a sweet piggy keychain courtesy of series sponsor National City Bank. They also feature free ball-point pens and green suckers. I don’t know why people would go any other night with sweet freebees like those.

The Hulk opened Thursday night. You can usually beat any opening-weekend rush by going to an AMC pre-noon show on Saturday or Sunday. I’m always surprised how few people take advantage of the fact that it’s only $5 at the Lennox before noon. Be warned! The Hulk standee in the lobby is dang scary! If I was a little kid I’d start bawling and have nightmares for months. So if you are taking the kiddies to see Kung Fu Panda be strategic in making your way through the lobby on your way back to the car.

If you wake up Saturday covered in blood and scars, wearing thick-soled shoes and wrapped in bandages, you’ll be all ready Zombie Walk Columbus! It leaves Goodale Park at 3pm and continues downtown where Resident Evil fans will be “saving” Columbus. Don’t forgot to bring a donation for the Mid-Ohio Foodbank. A tricky way to get your kids to exercise!

Take a look at the bunnies in the road in Andrea Mantegna’s Agony in the Garden. Completely oblivious to the larger drama that surrounds them, as is a bunny’s wont, these two are actually talking to one another. One makes an orator’s gesture to the other with a raised paw, signaling speech, which reminds me of another bunny we’ve featured on the Fine Arts blog: Jeff Koons’ Rabbit sculpture. Evidently bunnies have a lot to get off their chests.

Nobody helped me with my tissue paper flowers last week and I didn’t have time to blog as a result. All that’s behind me now and I can once again concentrate on my good times.

It’s too darn hot to go outside, so take Clint’s suggestion to stay in tomorrow and watch the Belmont Stakes Saturday at 5pm on ABC. Big Brown (above) is favored to win the Triple Crown. I like the horse Macho Again, ’cause it’s a cool name.

“Heeeee..always runs, while other waaaalk…DOO-DOOT-DOO-DOO!” Oh yeah! Thunderball will kick off the CAPA Summer Movie Series with the best theme of all the James Bond movies. Thank you, Tom Jones! Friday and Sunday. Don’t forget, Fridays are usually Family Fun Nights with prizes and stuff. I won a $50 Visa gift card once! Awesome!

The Columbus Arts Festival is this weekend and instead of having it on the river, it will be moved to the Discovery District - that’s the CCAD/Columbus Museum of Art area to you. In other words, look for the giant ‘ART’ sign’sculpture and you’ll be there. It runs from the sign to butt up against the Columbus State parking garage several blocks away - convienient! Here’s a map for the unfamiliar:

Former student Krista Reeder is one of the Spring Quarter graduates exhibiting at OSU’s Design 2008 Spring Exhibition. The opening was Wednesday, but the exhibit continues at the Urban Arts Space through June 13th. 50 W. Town St. Tuesday-Saturday 11am-6pm, Thursdays until 8pm.

Have a favorite Batman movie? Saturday Mike Reinhart, author of The Batman Filmography will be giving a lecture called Batman at the Movies at the Upper Arlington Public Library. 12:30pm, free. I’m a Superman-girl myself, but I’m still interested in attending.

What better way to start off our new weekly column than by featuring a bunny who lives amongst us? This little guy is a graffito so I don’t know of his origins, but he looks like a lapin agile to me and lives on the OSU campus.

This is the last week for Shoe of the Week. We’ll start exploring hidden animals in art next week (Beginning with bunnies! They’re so cute and fuzzy!). So until we start looking for hidden animals, I’ll leave you to Recherche du Shoe Perdu.
