Science Cafe: Lyme Disease in Ohio: What You Need to Know

Dr. Glen Needham OSU Extension Entomologist in the Center for Life Science Education, will update you on the most current distribution of the tick and how to differentiate it from the more common American dog tick, which can transmit Rocky Mt. spotted fever. He will also go over disease symptoms in people and dogs, offer tips on prevention and demonstrate how to properly remove an attached tick.

RefWorks 2.0 released

Check out RefWorks 2.0 new interface. Access to both RefWorks 2.0 and RefWorks Classic will continue until the end of the year. A series of  tutorials will show the new features and how to incorporate RefWorks into your research. RefWorks is a web-based bibliographic management program that is available to OSU faculty, staff and students.

A Flagship Plant for a Flagship University

“The world’s largest, rarest, smelliest, and on-the-brink-of-extinction blooming plant, the Titan Arum shows signs of blooming in Ohio State University’s Biological Sciences Greenhouse.”

This is the first Titan Arum grown from seed to bloom in Ohio and has been nicknamed Woody, in honor of the legendary Woody Hayes. The Titan Arum is projected to open in early May. You can watch the progress through the daily updates on the greenhouse website and via the live webcam.  More information about this plant can be found on the greenhouse website.

Trial Access to S-PAC

A 30-day trial has been arranged for S-PAC, a comprehensive database of animal production and management conference proceedings. Topics range from nutrition and management, to herd health, animal care and bioethics. As of this writing, 39 participating conferences have contributed 370 sets of proceeding and presentations to this unique and growing searchable collection.  S-PAC is developed by the American Dairy Science Association. A web browser bookmarklet is now available which allows users to sign-in to the proxy service (off-campus access) without having to visit the library web site first. Access to SpringerProtocols Added

OhioLINK has added access to SpringerProtocols to its extensive portfolio of electronic resources. SpringerProtocols is the largest subscription-based electronic database of reproducible laboratory protocols in the Life and Biomedical Sciences.  Protocols are step-by-step procedure recipes organized in a standardized format that can be executed in a controlled laboratory environment.  SpringerProtocols cover these subjects: Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, Biotechnology, Cancer Research, Cell Biology, Genetics/Genomics, Imaging/Radiology, Immunology, Infectious Diseases. SciFinder changing from desktop to web

CAS  will discontinue the desktop client version of SciFinder in several months.  We will migrate to the web version over the next two weeks, during which time we will have a mix of web and client seats. The client version of SciFinder WILL NO LONGER FUNCTION FOR OSU USERS AFTER February 14, 2011.

The web version is similar to the client version and differences are fairly intuitive; training materials are available here.  Details on how to register and use the web version are available here.

FAES Library Closed for Martin Luther King Day

Elsevier backfiles now available!

Thanks to an OhioLINK deal, the electronic backfiles of all Elsevier journals in the EJC are now available on the ScienceDirect website.  This gives you online access to all articles from these journals, from the first issue through the most current.

The Elsevier backfile includes many titles in Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.  This content will also be added to the EJC in the coming year.
